This was a first-time
experience for me and despite a bit of initial intimidation it turned out to be
a rewarding and informative conference. The first full day of the conference is
outlined on the schedule as ‘Congressional visits’ from 9am to 5pm, having
never done something like this before, that sounds like a long intimidating
day! Thankfully the evening before AIA Nation leadership went over what to
expect the following day and I was able to connect with the 4-5 other AIA
members that I would be in the congressional meetings with. We all grabbed
breakfast the morning of and divided up talking points for our visits. I thought it was
important to share with the mayors that they should seriously consider hiring a
chief architect if they don’t have one already. It’s a role that has existed in
many places in years past. The city of Charleston, South Carolina, has a rich
legacy of a chief architect making a big difference in the way that the city
operated and how it’s laid out. The mayor of Charleston came up to me
afterwards and said, it’s true, this person is a key advisor to my
administration. So I really want to elevate that concept, so that mayors,
county or state leaders look to architects to help solve some of our more
complicated civic issues.”"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Lastly, the conference keynote speaker, Preeti Sriratana,
Partner/Managing Director of"],[0,[6],1," Modellus Novus"],[0,[],0," and
Board Chair of"],[0,[7],1," Apex for Youth"],[0,[],0,", shared
how his practice prioritizes inclusivity, not just in its design ethos but in
the firm as a whole.
