The design team strategically and \u201csurgically\u201d inserted historic detailing into places it had been removed. One such example is the exterior of the temple. Most of the original terra cotta was still intact, but the main entrance and original courtyard areas had been altered. Historic documents of these areas were carefully studied, and missing areas were filled in with new material that matched the old details\u2014old and new were joined for a seamless and cohesive result. Throughout the project, both indoors and out, materials were selected for architectural appropriateness and durability. The client mandated a building to last another 50-100 years."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In addition to building system upgrades to provide more efficient power, mechanical, and water usage, physical vulnerabilities were addressed. The temple was seismically upgraded to address future earthquake events. An underground cistern manages potential flooding from stormwater. And discreet security enhancements, on both the building and grounds, make it a welcome place where visitors and patrons feel safe. It is a much-loved and heavily used center of worship for Latter-day Saints. Begun in 1923, the Mesa Temple marks the beginning of the Church\u2019s efforts to \u201ctake the Temple to the people\u201d and is one of the first three temples built outside of Utah."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Over the next 90+ years, the original Temple saw several renovations and additions. As a result, many of the original details of this neo-classical, colonial revival building were hidden, removed, or damaged. Components of the building, additions, and site felt disconnected from one another both literally and aesthetically. One critical project goal became restoring and repairing original details in the historic portions of the temple and reimagining original design characteristics in newer additions that had not considered cohesion with original historic design elements."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In addition to restoring the temple to its original beauty, the other critical drivers of the project were to improve the floor plans for better circulation and function as well as update the facility\u2019s systems. By addressing seismic vulnerabilities and patron accessibility, and completely replacing all HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, this restoration improves occupant comfort and safety and greatly improves the facility\u2019s life cycle and maintenance requirements. But the Mesa Temple has no equals\u2014it is a true original treasure. Through the cooperation of Church historians, original photographs and drawings, and our own archaeological investigation, we discovered\u2014the Mesa Temple is its own precedent. The resulting architectural design guide served as the precedent that directed the design at every point.
