[[1,"h3",[[0,[],0,"Design Excellence Statement:"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The Mesa Restoration project provides spaces to include, engage, and promote human connections. Improvements to the building make it more comfortable, functional, and beautiful for the membership of the church. Improvements to the site provide a welcoming, safe, lush garden for the neighborhood and city. And the project as a whole, reinstates an important connection to the history of the Temple in the region and an appreciation for its classic architecture. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Painstaking effort was taken to retain as much of the original materials and details on both the exterior and interior of the temple and its grounds. The design team strategically and “surgically” inserted historic detailing into places it had been removed. One such example is the exterior of the temple. Most of the original terra cotta was still intact, but the main entrance and original courtyard areas had been altered. Historic documents of these areas were carefully studied, and missing areas were filled in with new material that matched the old details—old and new were joined for a seamless and cohesive result. Throughout the project, both indoors and out, materials were selected for architectural appropriateness and durability. The client mandated a building to last another 50-100 years."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In addition to building system upgrades to provide more efficient power, mechanical, and water usage, physical vulnerabilities were addressed. The temple was seismically upgraded to address future earthquake events. An underground cistern manages potential flooding from stormwater. And discreet security enhancements, on both the building and grounds, make it a welcome place where visitors and patrons feel safe. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This design team’s corporate culture is one of knowledge sharing, collaboration, and advancement of the discipline. This project has been an incubator of discovery as the team explored ways to recreate historic looks and features, but with modern, more resilient materials. The architectural archaeology that informed design decisions sparked renewed interest in preservation and restoration. These lessons learned, as they are carried forward into new projects, will lead to further discovery and new ways to steward both our natural and architectural assets. "]]]]}

It is a much-loved and heavily used center of worship for Latter-day Saints. Begun in 1923, the Mesa Temple marks the beginning of the Church’s efforts to “take the Temple to the people” and is one of the first three temples built outside of Utah."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Over the next 90+ years, the original Temple saw several renovations and additions. As a result, many of the original details of this neo-classical, colonial revival building were hidden, removed, or damaged. Components of the building, additions, and site felt disconnected from one another both literally and aesthetically. One critical project goal became restoring and repairing original details in the historic portions of the temple and reimagining original design characteristics in newer additions that had not considered cohesion with original historic design elements."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In addition to restoring the temple to its original beauty, the other critical drivers of the project were to improve the floor plans for better circulation and function as well as update the facility’s systems. By addressing seismic vulnerabilities and patron accessibility, and completely replacing all HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, this restoration improves occupant comfort and safety and greatly improves the facility’s life cycle and maintenance requirements. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"One strategy for beginning a historic renovation is to look for precedents in other buildings of the same age, style, and grandeur. But the Mesa Temple has no equals—it is a true original treasure. Through the cooperation of Church historians, original photographs and drawings, and our own archaeological investigation, we discovered—the Mesa Temple is its own precedent. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The design team performed a very thorough study of the building and its original architecture, finishes, furnishings, etc. prior to project kickoff. The resulting architectural design guide served as the precedent that directed the design at every point. This document was key in maintaining the design vision throughout all areas of the project."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This project was a 7-year collaboration between owner, design team, contractor, and hundreds of specialized manufacturers and trades all working together to achieve a beautifully renovated historic landmark.
