If an idea built up the brief it was incorporated into the design and if it was determined not to then it was removed. Principles such as Integration, Community, Wellness, Change and Discovery from the Framework for Design Excellence can be linked directly to the design brief. Other principles in the Design Framework were addressed as goals were set early on to attempt a Zero Energy Certification and LEED Gold building. \n"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"\nOne key driver for the project was a robust community outreach process which included public events at a local movie theater, at an adjacent community center, at another branch library, and at a back to school night. There was strong resolve from the community to create a natural gathering space; a place that was accessible to all, and a highly sustainable project. Success in this process came as no individual design endeavor such as aesthetics, economics, sustainability, or community involvement were allowed to trump each other. All were important, and vigorous attempts were made to ensure excellence in all areas of a holistic design.\n"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"\nAs a community well, people come to this project not just for those things which are essential to life but also for personal wellness, gathering, and social interaction. While many libraries close at early hours and are limited in their days of operation, portions of this building are accessible to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Public gathering space surrounds the entirety of the library including an amphitheater embraced by the building and planted site walls as well as a path which meanders from public sidewalk up a gentle slope onto a vegetated roof. The large photovoltaic shaded patio provides striking 360 degree panoramic views of the Salt Lake Valley and Wasatch Mountains. This is highly utilized by the community and has even hosted weddings. These spaces are open at all times, so when the doors of the library are required to lock the building still serves the community and activates the neighborhood.\n"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"\nThe playful interior of the library pulls the community in with its high ceilings, natural daylight, vibrant color and active environments. Comfortable lounge style furniture is interspersed between stacks, creating activity and study nodes throughout the library. Separate study and conference spaces are visually connected to the rest of the library. A large public meeting space graces the perimeter with glass between the library and the street. This and other measures constantly connect the library patron to the neighborhood, embellishing the sense of \u2018eyes on the street\u2019 and a sense of belonging."]]]]}

The library is an anchor in the new urbanist Daybreak development that promotes local community values, prioritizes people, and activates streets while still accommodating vehicular transportation. Emphasis is placed on the street as a quality community gathering space. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"\n\nThe urban aspects of this project focus on maximizing public space in and around the new library. Public art, gardens, gathering space and even an outdoor amphitheater naturally integrated into the building\u2019s walls line the street front blurring the boundary between building and site. The library features ground floor uses that physically and visually connect to the adjacent streetscape. High ceilings celebrate the visual transition between exterior and interior spaces. To create a sense of place, this project includes a universally accessible green roof which engages viewers from the surrounding balconies above. Native landscapes on the roof of this public building are always accessible, and represent the rewilding of Daybreak\u2019s dense Town Center. Ultimately, the building tops out with a solar panel shade canopy for those enjoying the public space on the roof.\n"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"\nThe Daybreak Library distinguishes itself as a 21st century library, a resource for the free exchange of thoughts, ideas, and skills. Beyond the offerings of a traditional library it is a lab for learning. The maker space allows patrons the opportunity for hands-on learning with tools such as sewing machines, crafting equipment, 3d and other print making equipment. A sound studio, complete with instruments provides opportunity for rehearsing and recording music as well as podcast production. There is a workshop which includes an operable wall. This indoor\/outdoor space is perfect for teaching skills such as bicycle maintenance as the paths of the site tie directly into a regional trail system. The vegetated roof provides opportunity to teach about the ecology of the surrounding trail systems. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"\n\nThe key location of this building makes it important that this library was developed as a multigenerational destination building. It was important to avoid popular trends and design a building that could only exist in this location. The resulting project appears to grow up and out of the earth as if it had always been a part of the site. It was also important that the building be eco friendly and cost effective to operate. The large solar array becomes a distinguishing feature to the building\u0027s design, a provider of shade, and pushes the building along the path to achieving net zero energy. A thoughtful envelope design using an innovative ground source HVAC system, which does not use water, are key elements to finding a balance between energy production and consumption on site. It should be noted that this highly efficient building was built at market rate, right around $300\/sf."]]]]}
