Named after Florida Ruffin Ridley, a Black activist, and suffragist, the PreK-8 neighborhood school deftly integrates a historically-significant Georgian schoolhouse. It holds civic importance as the school that John F. Kennedy attended, with two new academic wings to offer a modern educational program."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The Florida Ruffin Ridley School is LEED Gold certified and distinguished as one of the most energy-efficient schools in the Commonwealth. Whereas before, pavement and muddy lawn were the dominant outdoor elements due to longtime community use, the design introduced a lively, diverse landscape. The residents were initially concerned with the siting of the new school. Still, with each meeting that Robert P. Madison International held in the community, they were more pleased with the outcome. The design results from true collaboration between the design team, the community, and the residents. The project is adjacent to two major public transit lines."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The plan provides for approximately 877 residential units of mixed-income housing and 72,000 square feet of retail spaces. Intended for sale are one hundred ten of the units, and the rest will be rental units. Different building typologies are in the development plans, including high-rise market-rate housing, six-story mid-rise mixed-use buildings, townhomes, and walk-up apartments scattered throughout the site. The design approach for this project expands the design palette. The infusion of natural light through welcoming entries daylit corridors, and solar orientation all upgrade the typical NC DOT office building. The shift in the design approach for the proposed new office building type was at the same cost per square foot as its predecessors. Despite the limitation in the budget, the team was able to effectively realize a building that employed strategies proven to increase the health and productivity of workers and promote sustainability."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The American Institute of Architects Triangle Chapter recently recognized NC DOT Division 8 Office for a Merit Design Award at the 2021 Design Awards Ceremony."]]]]}
