These upgrades included adding a guest room, a complete makeover of the
kitchen, the addition of a dining area, and enhancements to the outdoor spaces."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[0],0,"Architect’s"],[0,[],1," Statement:"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Good design is pervasive.
Architecture should be about much more than the building envelope. It should
extend within to the configuration and contents, and it should spill out to
embrace the
environment in which it is located. This philosophy is borne out in this
project which focuses as much on the interior development within and and the
garden without, as it does on the angular forms of the architecture."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"With
children now grown and living away,
there was a desire to add a guest bedroom that could accommodate a family. A second floor guestroom was carved out of an
attic space. The angular space features a large shed dormer fit out with a
window seat/twin bed that looks
into
the courtyard and garden below."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"With the wife’s retirement came a renewed
desire to nourish her hobby of gardening and baking. The kitchen cabinets and
appliances were replaced and the layout tweaked for
efficiency. The niche, which had served as a banquette, was repurposed as a
coffee bar, with a shallow
table and bench for grandchildren. Seating at the island is provided and allow
for interaction with the cook. The
displaced function of the banquette was
moved to the opposite side of the kitchen, in a new addition pushed out into
the garden. A new dining table expands to accommodate eight adults, while
grandchildren occupy a shallow table and bench opposite the coffee bar. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The dining room addition tucks
under a reconstructed and carefully detailed deck, which looks down and across
the garden. An exterior stained concrete patio was clad with porcelain pavers
and expands into the garden as a path. This path terminates in a fountain just
outside the dining area, where it can be enjoyed by the users."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Good design is pervasive."]]]]}
Jury

[["strong
1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"Comments"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This was the project that the jury spent the longest time discussing. The addition, while modest in size, had a profound impact on the building’s exterior - and had been handled seamlessly. Without the before and after images, it was difficult to determine where the old ended and the new began. The design beautifully merged interior and exterior space, and it was clear that as much love went into the design of the garden as had gone into that of the kitchen. The ‘found’ attic space was skillfully converted into a family bedroom. The sliding panel was a unique touch, and we appreciated that the translucent panel aligned with the window when in the open position. The wall composition when this panel was open or closed was well balanced and thought out. We fully expect to see images of this residence in architectural magazines."]]]]}
