Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and Technology (SMART) Building - AIA Chesapeake Bay Merit Award

{"version":"0.3.0","atoms":[],"cards":[],"markups":[],"sections":[[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and Technology (SMART) Building is located at the \u201cUniversity System of Maryland at Southern Maryland\u201d near the US Naval Air Warfare Center and the UM Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Site. The project transforms an existing surface parking lot into a new campus quadrangle with connective pedestrian paths. The building houses classrooms, laboratories, conference spaces and faculty offices. The unmanned aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic spaces, including the water tunnel, are not offered anywhere else in the state. Sustainability was a priority, especially with the woodlands and wetlands that surrounded the campus. Materials were mindfully selected to reflect the campus image and character, ensuring long-term use of the building. On the interior, we created opportunities for light to enter the space by adding a skylight to the gallery to shine light into the classrooms set away from the exterior walls. We used materials to block out solar heat and increase the efficiency of the building. This new building truly sets the benchmark for other projects in the University System of Maryland."]]]]}
