Urban Ashes Showcases Their Circular UrbanWood Triconomy™ - Maximizing the Utilization of Ann Arbor & Washtenaw County’s Fallen Urban Trees
Overview

[[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Urban
Ashes, The City of Ann Arbor Forestry Department, A2Zero, Urban Wood Network
Michigan, Tervol’s Wood Products LLC and the Lumberjacks will host a community
engagement event at Lumberjacks lumber yard/store, located at 8205 Jackson Rd,
Ann Arbor, Michigan on October 9th. The presentation will start promptly at
noon and run for 2.5 hours. The event will showcase the pilot model of Urban
Ashes’ Circular UrbanWood Triconomy™ (CUT Model™), benefitting the citizens of
Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. The CUT Model™ will maximize the utilization of
Ann Arbor’s and Washtenaw County’s fallen urban trees and provide
career/business opportunities for our formerly incarcerated citizens and youth
that have had contact with the justice system.
"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The presentation will juxtapose the business-as-usual
methods of mulching all of the fallen urban trees, used by cities across the
country, with the CUT Model™, which ensures the highest social, economic, and
environmental utilization of our fallen urban trees. This event will include a
live tour of the LumberJacks yard and retail lumber store displaying the CUT
Model™, as logs are processed from arrival, to sorting, and with a milling
demonstration. Attendees will become well informed on the benefits of adopting
the CUT Model™ to capture the full benefit from fallen urban trees. This is
currently a missed opportunity to continue to sequester the carbon within these
trees and cutdown on the city’s disposal fees. It will also demonstrate the
importance and value of the local private businesses needed to realize the
tree’s maximum potential. For example, the attendees will be able to benefit
from The Lumberjacks huge sale on a wide selection of kiln dried urban wood,
live-edge slabs and lumber milled, all from local trees.
"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Featured at the event is the diversion of a single
urban black locust tree from the business-as-usual process, creating the
opportunity to sequester the release of ~ 3000lbs of carbon or ~5 metric tons
of CO2 equivalent emissions. This also equals the offset of ~5,520lbs of coal
burning emissions, or ~11.6 barrels of oil consumed, or the emissions from the
electricity of one average home for about a year. This single diversion also
equals about what ~82.5 tree seedlings
sequester in 10 years.
"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Leading the event is Paul Hickman, founder and CEO of
Urban Ashes. Paul has over 25 years of experience in the urban and reclaimed
wood industries as a designer, manufacturer, advocate, and consultant. Paul
launched Urban Ashes as a for-profit social enterprise in 2009 out of the
original Urban Wood Project, which is now the national Urban Wood Network. The
Urban Wood Project was created in 2005 as a response to the onslaught of the
Emerald Ash Borer in Southeast Michigan. Over the next 10 years Urban Ashes
grew to sell furniture and picture frames to over 250 retail partners in 43
states. In 2019, Paul shifted the focus of Urban Ashes from manufacturing to
consulting with municipalities and businesses to design, develop and implement
urban wood utilization infrastructure across the country. Currently, Urban
Ashes is working with multiple cities in Michigan and other states to implement
their CUT Model™.
"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Open To The Public And Tickets Are Free"]]]]}
