[[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"While surgical services remain scarce for much of the world, this annex to the existing Kyabriwa Surgical Center in Kyabirwa, Uganda, dispels the myth that such services are logistically impossible to provide in rural areas. When complete, this project will address the specific needs of the rural patients who access the center and need to stay overnight following their procedures. Situated near the country’s famous White Nile River rapids and five miles north of Jinja, the nearest city, this project enhances the center’s accessible and affordable care for more than 570,000 Ugandans. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Since it was built in 2019, the 8,000-square-foot surgical center has accommodated nearly 2,000 procedures, most of which have not required overnight stays. Funded by significant donations from New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, the award-winning center is a self-sustaining facility, generating all of its power from solar panels while collecting and storing water for use. The demand for treatment and the number of patients from across the region accessing the center continue to increase, and this new ward will accommodate patients who require a more extended recovery period. Additionally, it will drastically reduce travel time, which for many can be as long as five hours, to a surgery center that supports overnight recovery."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"A new advanced laboratory in this space will allow the acquisition of biologic materials for eventual genetic and genomic analysis. Data from this laboratory can favorably influence treatment of a variety of diseases. A state of the art surgical simulation center is also planned for the space which will have an important impact on the training of surgeons in East Africa."]]],[1,"blockquote",[[0,[],0,"“This project’s purpose, and the amount of work needed to bring electricity to this community, are laudable.” - Jury comment"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Building in remote places like Kyabirwa requires careful planning and consideration of construction techniques coupled with a deep understanding of material availability. To ensure the ward addresses the specific conditions of the local climate, the design team balanced familiar construction methods with materials available to the region. Much like the existing surgical center, the new ward incorporates natural and long-lasting materials such as clay, stone, and terrazzo over materials that would require shipping from afar. Much like its sister building, the ward is being built by local laborers skilled in using such materials."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In this remote region, the local utility companies provide intermittent power and water. Therefore, the new ward, like the existing center, will be entirely off the grid. It will draw power from the center’s solar panels, which generate 54,000 kWh of electricity and can increase its output by 50%. The addition of an on-site sewage treatment and disposal system means that both the center and new ward can be replicated anywhere in the world. "]]],[1,"blockquote",[[0,[],0,"“This project has a good relationship to the site, and the elevations are very clean and clear. The jury liked how the exterior geometry of the masonry relates to the roof form." - Jury comment"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In addition to hosting overnight stays, the new ward features a cutting-edge laboratory, a staff canteen, a training area, and accommodations for staff to stay overnight. The staff comprises 33 Ugandan health care providers and administrators, including one head surgeon, two anesthesiologists, two medical officers, and nine nurses who provide direct care. All patient records are stored in a cloud-based system developed by a Ugandan software developer. The facility continues to nurture its strong connections to Mount Sinai Hospital, whose doctors offer periodic consultations and guidance during complex procedures.
