"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The clinic, which offer health care services at the highest level on
a pro bono basis, arose from a productive partnership between the design team
and Ugandan and American doctors. The clinic sits close to the equator, just
north of Uganda’s great Lake Victoria. Its adjacency to a school advances the
notion that offering similar services near one another reduces the strain on
large communal families. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The typical large and close-knit structure of ordinary Ugandan
families was critical to the design. Spaces between buildings were a priority,
programmed to promote informal connection and surprise experiences as users
move through the campus. Its central ground plane is defined by pavers,
plantings, trees, and cascading steps that feature discrete seating zones. It
also builds on the traditions of local tradespeople while elevating design
through applied research and adapted typologies. A majority of the wall systems include dry-stack
brick made from excavated compressed dirt from the site. Doors, screens, and
other accents are fashioned from eucalyptus planks. In focusing on native
materials, the team ensured the clinic’s construction expanded local
craftspeople’s knowledge so they could employ these sustainable techniques in
future projects. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The clinic needs to operate without air conditioning, so several elements
work in concert to create a passive and effective health care campus, including
a solar chimney that maintains a cool temperature within the clinic, even in
the hottest months. In addition, to facilitate diffuse light and airflow, the
team incorporated a layered screen system made from mosquito mesh and bamboo
sticks that allow for infill and windows."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This project is a true demonstration of design’s ability to solve
problems for people in need.
