[[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Academic medical facilities in urban areas regularly provide critical care for patients, but their fast-growing specialty clinics are too often housed in aging buildings. The University of California San Francisco Medical Center, one of the country’s top 10 hospitals, was not immune to this challenge. Its pancreatic and liver transplant center on its Parnassus campus needed room to grow, but the neighboring facility it could expand into was cramped and outdated. For this critical project, the team transformed the expansion space into an airy and welcoming environment for patients and families who travel great distances for transplant care. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Once hidden behind decades of piecemeal updates, the building’s minimalist features—round concrete columns, arched beams, and expansive windows that frame views of the city—have been revealed and now celebrate the beauty of San Francisco’s landscape. In addition, the renovations foster an uplifting atmosphere for patients, staff, and families. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Integrated forms and finishes support the healing environment while also enhancing the existing architectural language. The existing clinic featured maple floors and waved ceiling panels and was punctuated by a compound plaster wall visible from the updated entry. The new clinic flows seamlessly into the existing interior design, wrapping the space in flowing geometry and warm wood. "]]],[1,"blockquote",[[0,[],0,"“This unusual renovation of a brutalist building is striking, and the before and after of the lobby is commendable; they made it very warm and welcoming. It is impressive how the team was able to pull curves from the existing building while highlighting a historic architectural form.” - Jury comment"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The project unites three of the hospital’s transplant clinical services under one roof, and the team opened up spaces in the building through designated pods and zones that simplify the design framework. The design incorporates principles of neuro-architecture, including curves, sculptural lighting, and views, to enhance healing and strengthen the patient experience."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Since transplant patients often travel for care and require longer stays, a particular emphasis has been placed on patient comfort. To ensure each of the spacious exam rooms is as functional as it is welcoming, the team relied on immersive virtual reality and full-scale mock-ups during the design process. In addition, the integrated design ensures the well-being of the clinic’s staff. For example, the reception desk features four workstations that easily transition from sitting to standing, emphasizing healthy movement, while ergonomically designed physician desks allow the clinicians to transition smoothly between patients. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Two challenges must be overcome when redesigning and repurposing aging health care infrastructure: maintaining the integrity of the original design and responsibly stewarding resources. The expanded UCSF Connie Frank Transplant Center resulted in a savings of 25% and prioritized patient comfort and efficiency without compromising quality.
[["a",["href","https://www.aia.org/resources/6077668-framework-for-design-excellence","target","_new"]],["strong"],["em
1,"h2",[[0,[],0,"AIA Framework for Design Excellence"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The "],[0,[0],1,"AIA Framework for Design Excellence"],[0,[],0," represents the defining
principles of good design in the 21st century.
