The University of California San Francisco Medical Center, one of the country\u2019s top 10 hospitals, was not immune to this challenge. Its pancreatic and liver transplant center on its Parnassus campus needed room to grow, but the neighboring facility it could expand into was cramped and outdated. For this critical project, the team transformed the expansion space into an airy and welcoming environment for patients and families who travel great distances for transplant care. To ensure each of the spacious exam rooms is as functional as it is welcoming, the team relied on immersive virtual reality and full-scale mock-ups during the design process. In addition, the integrated design ensures the well-being of the clinic\u2019s staff. For example, the reception desk features four workstations that easily transition from sitting to standing, emphasizing healthy movement, while ergonomically designed physician desks allow the clinicians to transition smoothly between patients.
