Building Tour - Shaw Middle School and On Track Academy

As part of the Hillyard Community Campus project, Spokane Public Library\u2019s Hillyard Branch was integrated into the design, tripling the size of the traditional middle school library while offering the resources of the entire public library system to students. The Public Library and Shaw Middle School\u2019s library are co-located so that shared space can flex between student and public use while maintaining a line of access control that ensures the security of students. The ultimate goal was to create a campus feel while enhancing the opportunities for shared assets benefiting students, families, and the community. The learning neighborhood concept that is central to the district\u2019s middle school pedagogy was born out of the desire to approach teaching and learning in a unique way to support the needs of the students in a familial setting while embracing the broader resources of the campus."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"On Track Academy offers an alternate path for high school students to excel in a hands-on curriculum. A central commons serves as the gathering and social hub of a network of classrooms, lab spaces, and a 3,000 sqft STEM space. The 52,000 sqft building eschews traditional high school layout by eliminating corridors and lockers in favor of open shared areas with soft seating and learning amenities available to full classes or small group discussions. The Creative Suites offer flexible spaces for earth sciences, CTE, and art; all of which can open up into the courtyard to create an interconnected network of learning."]]]]}
