"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Because of the\nCovid-19 pandemic restrictions, Bernard worked remotely on documenting the\nQueen Anne\u0027s County Courthouse, originally constructed from 1792-96 and\ncurrently the oldest continuously used court building in the state of Maryland.\nFunding and administration of the project was provided jointly by AIA Maryland\nand Preservation Maryland. The Courthouse remained in its original state until\nafter the Civil War when, in 1876, plans were made to rebuild the structure,\n\u0022on a scale which will change it from one of the most inconvenient to one\nof the most desirable of our county buildings.\u0022 Aside from this reconstruction,\nwhich was accomplished for $6,800 under the direction of Baltimore architect\nJames Crawford Neilson, the exterior of the Courthouse is virtually the same as\nit was when originally constructed. While a new, and much larger,\nCircuit Court building was recently constructed in downtown Centreville, thanks\nin small part to these efforts drawing attention to it, the old court building\nis now slated to be rehabilitated and repurposed for use by the Orphan\u2019s Court\nand as county offices. AIA Maryland also contacted the National Park Service\nabout donating the internship work products for posterity in the records of the\nLibrary of Congress. I am very pleased for all these opportunities, since\nthey will enrich the HABS collection with Maryland sites. And now I hear about\nthis. The scholarship\nprovides college students the opportunity to experience historic preservation\nfirst-hand and support the diverse and complex work of saving our older\nbuildings. Interns engage in a wide variety of projects, including fieldwork\n(documentation, measuring, photography, etc.) as well as producing drawings for\nsignificant historic sites around the state which are in desperate need of\nbetter documentation.
