The building stood vacant and abandoned for several years before being purchased by one of Alaska\u2019s largest demolition, abatement, and recycling companies who wished to convert it into their headquarters and a multi-use industrial development. The facility is highly visible\u2014in part to convey the quality of care delivered inside, but also to communicate a high degree of respect for those seeking care. On the floor in the waiting room, an outline of the Upper Tanana River leads patients to a secure entry point to clinical spaces. The floor plan emphasizes purpose, patient access, the relation between adjacent services, and operational efficiency. The design placement of each department was intentional to flow within the form of the building while also considering cost impacts and avoiding a maze of clinical spaces.
