Various incarnations and exterior claddings over
that period are like a time capsule of architectural styles and commercial
developments in the evolution of the city’s downtown district."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The
earliest
historic photos of the building date from the late nineteenth century. At that
time
the building was known as The Trade Palace, where dry goods, clothing, carpet
and household items were sold. Over the years the building housed a bank,
drugstore, jewelry store, ladies clothing boutique, and a sandwich shop. While
the masonry structure stayed basically the same, its exterior changed with
every generation as fashions came and went. Windows were progressively filled
in until the 1960’s, when the building was fully clad in metal and all but a
few windows above the ground floor remained. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The
building underwent a major modernization in the 1990’s when the metal siding
was removed, and then again in 2019 when it was renamed The Corner Office and
adapted as a mixed-use office and retail building. The architects brought a
sense of order to the front of the building with broad moldings around the
windows and four projecting balconies that are suspended by cables from the
old-but-sturdy masonry structure. The architects selected a dark charcoal color
to unify the exterior appearance of the masonry walls but still show evidence
of many years of changes. The window moldings and cornice were painted white to
create a striking contrast with the masonry walls. An obsolete fire escape on
the east facade was decommissioned but retained and highlighted with red paint
as a historic architectural feature. The Corner Office has become a favorite
location for both amateur and professional photographers."]]]]}

[["strong
1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"Comments"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This is a nicely-executed exterior restoration of a historic structure. The exterior color choice is bold, bringing attention away from - while still not wholly concealing - previous reconstruction, demolition, or loss, leaving the imperfections in the brick as a chronicle of the past. There is a very nice contrast in both color and texture between the old brick and the new woodwork. The new balconies are simple and well-considered, with delicate structural support. Keeping the fire escape and highlighting it in bright red is a nice treatment of artifact and a very Parc de la Villette follies. The stained wood entry doors in the black storefront, along with charcoal body, white trims, and red stair make for a visually intriguing urban composition. Overall, the project demonstrates good restraint; it is important to know when not to design too much."]]]]}
