Body
{"version":"0.3.0","atoms":[],"cards":[],"markups":[["strong"]],"sections":[[1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"Program Summary and Statement:"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Alabama\nConstitution Hall Park celebrates the 2019 Bicentennial of Alabama Statehood.\nThe one-acre site occupies a half city block in downtown Huntsville, on the\nsite where the Alabama Constitution was ratified in 1819. The buildings\nsurrounding the park are replicas of historic structures\ncreated over a twenty-year period starting in the mid-1970. Over\nthe\nyears the site evolved into a fully fenced, historical environment where\nvisitors, mainly school groups, were required to purchase a ticket to enter.\nThe interior of the site was a maze of irregular concrete paths connecting\nagricultural, craft and domestic life displays that sought to illuminate life\nin Alabama in the early nineteenth century. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"In\norder\nto make the site more relevant to the whole community, the architects proposed\nremoval of the perimeter fencing and establishing the site as a public park,\nwith porous edges and entrances on three different streets. Small structures\noccupying the center of the site were removed or strategically relocated to\nhelp define a linear green space at the center of the site. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The\nentire site was terraced and ramped to provide universal access to the park and\nthe surrounding buildings. An existing picnic pavilion was\nrenovated to create a stronger architectural focal point at the east end of the\ncentral green. The west end of the green is\nanchored by a new pavilion that features the key materials of early nineteenth\ncentury construction in Alabama: brick, wood and limestone. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The\npark is now a central gathering space in the heart of downtown Huntsville. It\nplays host to an outdoor concert series and regular public events and has\nbecome a desirable venue for weddings and other private events."]]]]}

{"version":"0.3.0","atoms":[],"cards":[],"markups":[["strong"]],"sections":[[1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"Comments"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This is a gorgeous re-conceptualization of an existing park, featuring expert use of historic materials and detailing. The composition of paths and structures is intuitive and well-balanced, and the removal of the perimeter fence facilitates a transition to permeable edges, which is to be commended. The project is accessible in both the literal and social way, as this public space should be. The organization of the outdoor space and inclusion of a civic green is very well done, while the detailing of the two anchoring pavilions and architectural lighting concept throughout the site is elegantly executed. Overall, this is a good example of public space design, creating lots of effect from one acre of space, especially compared"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"to the initial condition of the site. The design shapes the space and opens it for the community to use,"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"instead of being preoccupied with making a bold architectural statement."]]]]}
