The program facilitates key\npartnerships between the college and private industry partners. The facility\nfeatures state-of-the-art learning environments for students, faculty, and\nstaff that are spread over two floors.\nIn order to make both programs more visible to the\npublic, the two floors of the building are connected by ample amounts of\ninterior glass. Ultimately, the new facility sets a standard in automotive\neducational environments, and will serve as an example for similar programs in\nthe region and across the country. On the west side, towards Downtown Omaha, it lifts off the ground,\ncreating an elevated \u0022canvas\u0022 in the air and acts as a billboard to\nthe city. The space under the cantilever then becomes a protected pedestrian\narea \u2013 a large bus stop for group collection and arrival. The eastern form\nalong the river anchors into the site along the riverfront boardwalk. Directly connected to the courts tower, the youth center\nis designed with the aesthetic of an urban apartment building while maintaining\nthe durability and security required. Clad in brick, metal panel and glass,\nample daylight with views in (when appropriate) and out are the basis for a\nnormative environment. The interior material pallet is \u201csoft\u201d and detailed to\nreflect a therapeutic setting. The complex, with collocated facilities and a\nnormative, trauma informed design, will allow for intensive restorative care,\ncounseling, and guidance; serving the youth, their families, and the entire\ncommunity. The Heritage Center\naddition provides an all-new glazed enclosure that connects University Tower,\nthe oldest surviving building at the school, with Wittson Hall, which houses\nthe medical library. The\nnorth fa\u00e7ade, inspired by the rippling of a flag in the wind, guides veterans\nand staff to the entry. The \u201cflag wall\u201d encloses the clinic waiting area, which\nis designed as one continuous space to emphasize social connections that are so\nvital to veteran wellness. In the clinic waiting area, a horizontally layered\nlimestone wall guides patients to their care environment. Its form and\nmateriality are inspired by the layers of soil tracked home by veterans through\nperiods of peace and conflict. Clinical layout combines best practices from the\nVA and private sector. Clinics use an onstage\/offstage configuration, enabling\ncross-disciplinary collaboration between clinicians. The house comprises simple masses with spatial\nintersections that create a complex interior environment, all focused on the\nlake. A mute opacity on the inland side provides privacy and intimacy, while\nthe lake side opens to generous views and exterior spaces. Glass curtain walls\nand decks extend the indoor surfaces outside. Indoor porosity continues\nvertically connecting floors to provide a counterpoint to the monolithic\nstacked-box appearance of the exterior. Material selections are at a minimum,\nmaintaining the prominence of the lake and surrounding woods. Furniture and\nartwork were selected with input from the Architect. Environmental systems\ninclude a super-insulated building envelope, triple-pane glass, in-floor\nradiant heating, ducted forced-air cooling, and recessed or coved LED lighting."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[2],1,"Jury Comments: "],[0,[],0,"This\nproject brings together a play of light and dark with dramatic materials and\ncrisp detailing, both on the interior and exterior. The requirements for\ndifferent geometries prevent the use of the same field for both sports. Often,\nthe two field solution results in facilities that are inequitable between\nwomen\u2019s and men\u2019s sports. The site rises sharply away from the street to the\nwest climbing 45\u2019 with a continued rise into multi-family residential beyond.\nAbove the covered deck is a covered, open air second deck open to both fields.\nThe remainder of the pavilion consists of press and broadcast facilities for\neach field. A 450,000-square-foot expansion and\nrenovation project at the heart of Omaha, this project is a celebration of\ncolor and a destination to improve children\u2019s lives. On the facade, dichroic fins\nwithin the unitized curtain wall system refract rainbows of light and\nperforated metal screens at the base are illuminated with color-changing\nscenes. The building comes alive. When inside, feelings of playfulness,\nopenness, and discovery were created for an optimistic patient experience and\npositive distraction. Focusing on shape, color, and print, the design team\ndeveloped an interior that is childlike, not childish. Graphics were\nincorporated to draw people through patient floors, while wood ceilings in\nwaiting spaces indicate moments of pause. Ranging from phone booths\nfor quiet work; conference rooms for hybrid meetings; large collaboration\nspaces for all-staff events; and open offices organized into neighborhoods,\nthese working environments offer diversity in scale, visibility, and activity.\nAt the heart of the 66,000-sf floorplate is the main two-story entry and dining\nspace where energy and creative collisions are intended to occur. Moving\ntowards the perimeter, stimulus and noise recede to calm and quiet for more\nfocused work. Additionally, vertical openings between floors \u2013 visual or\nphysical \u2013 are distributed throughout to further enhance interaction. A feature\nstair and skylight were inserted within the central space, infusing it with\nnatural light and transparency across floors. This central library concept supports\nthis mission, by providing access to 21st century resources and prioritizing\nspace \u2013 for gathering, learning, and collaborating \u2013 as a critical public resource.\nAs technology has transformed our world, libraries must also transform \u2013 and in\nthe process become a tool for the democratization of not just information, but\nalso technology. While books and typical library materials will be on display\nand browsable on every level, the bulk of the system collection will be housed\nin an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) \u2013 a first-of-its-kind for a\npublic library. Some residents still depended on the viaduct as a\nconnector in the recreational trail system. So when a section of bridgework sat\nin extended purgatory while awaiting demolition permissions from the railroad\nauthorities, we were asked to reimagine the ruin as a public amenity. Paths for\npedestrians and cyclists follow the viaduct\u0027s curved approach to the crossing,\nterminating at a vertical tower. Ascending, one is treated to a long view of\nthe prairie horizon. Providing a visual connection between the bridge and the\ntracks, a lower-deck observation platform offers a moment of respite and serves\nas a trainspotting destination for a surprising number of enthusiasts - local\nand tourist.
