The founding of Shreveport in 1836 and its development over the next one hundred years set the stage for architect Edward F. Neild and the implementation of Neoclassicism in the city. Meet the people of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, introduce yourself to the sponsors of the event, make friends with other interested people, and hear how they are interested in joining the tour. The time begins with coffee and pastries at the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, where Shreveport architect Chris Elberson of Somdal & Associates will give a short lecture on his firm’s predecessor, Edward F. Neild. We will gather for a walking tour in downtown Shreveport, where we will walk past about a dozen classically inspired buildings with Guy Carwile, Professor at Louisiana Tech University, and Robert Trudeau, a local expert historian. Although most of our visits and lectures will occur outside these structures, we have a unique collection of private buildings that will be opened to our tour group for private access to the interiors. After lunch and a brief rest at the SRAC, we will proceed on a trolley car for a seated tour of Historic Fairfield Avenue, where Guy Carwile and Robert Trudeau will offer information regarding how Classicism influenced residential architecture. We will head back downtown, where Wendy Benscoter, Shreveport Common, is an UNcommon revitalization project of the City of Shreveport. Shreveport Regional Arts Council will discuss the revitalization process of Texas Avenue. We will head down Texas Avenue on foot for an exciting tour of historic buildings in “preservation-in-progress” and access private buildings. The day concludes with a late-afternoon “Renovator’s Happy Hour” at an intimate venue with heavy hors d’oeuvres and wine."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2023"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Our foray ends on the morning of Sunday, October 8, with a private tour of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum and a private screening of “Unexpected Modernism,” with the film’s producer, Gregory Kallenberg, a 45-minute film about prolific mid-century modern architects in Shreveport, the Weiner brothers.
