The site is pedestrian and river-front focused, lending itself to the described micro-apartment program as seen in other prominent global cities. The neighborhood\u2019s many robust warehouse buildings have been in use in various capacities for over 100 years: storage, industry, residential and commercial. A modernized warehouse building type utilizing time tested sustainable techniques such as passive ventilation, solar shading, passive \u0026 active solar combined with innovative mass timber construction create a forward-thinking project, while connecting to the neighborhood\u2019s history."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"An innovative, \u201cgood neighbor\u201d building design ensures community acceptance and care for the new building. Prefabricated brick balconies are assembled around the perimeter of the buildings. They provide solar control and provide more living space to each unit by having exterior doors which can close the balcony from weather. Often attached balconies sit idle during cold months. AIA"]]],[10,4],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The main idea\nfor this project was to explore a new CLT structural typology for the\nresidential development inspired from stacking the surrounding residential and\nwarehouse forms, to create a modular biophilic design that both actively and\npassively restores the site to its native beginnings."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The site is designed to facilitate\nconnections to and through the building to connect the East Greenfield Area\nparkway with the Lower Kinnikinnick area while immersing people in the native\nlandscape that once covered the region. This connectivity continues into the\nbuilt environment as community spaces are provided at each level for the\nresidents providing a multiplicity of spaces for communal engagement all\naccessed by accessible routes. Additionally, four points of public art\ninstallation are provided in the public spaces which will be created by Native\nAmerican Artist as a homage to the original inhabitants of the region. The four\npublic art installations on the site are two mural spaces (one on the west\nfa\u00e7ade of the north building and one on the west fa\u00e7ade of the South building)\nand two installation spaces (one at the Valley Plaza and one in the Waterfront\nPlaza near the Kinnikinnick River)."]]],[1,"p",[]],[10,5],[10,6],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The site is designed to restore\nthe native wetlands and meadows that once occupied the region, providing\nhabitats to the decreased fish, insect, and bird populations. The wetland areas\ntier down to the riverfront along terraces, acting as bioswales, to catch and\nretain stormwater landing on the site from rushing into the river. Multiple\npathways traverse along the terraces creating smaller moments of reflection and\nisolation among the reeds. These terraces are planted with native vegetation\ndesigned to recreate a portion of the Grand Trunk Swamp on lower levels of the\nsite: Rice, Indian Grass, Bluestem, Culver root, Holley, and Hemlock. The\nremaining potions of the site are dedicated to naturalizing meadows planted\nwith drought resistant Wisconsin native plants that do not need irrigation: Butterfly\nWeed, Thistle, Milkweed, Liatris, Sage, Coneflower, Hyssop, Yarrow, Aster,\nSunflowers, Black Eyed Susans, Daisy, Whorled Milkweed, and Common Milkweed.\nBee hives, bird, and bat houses are provided on the blank mechanical facades of\nthe building, enlivening what would be a dormant portion of the exterior into a\nrestorative vertical habitat."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[2],1,"Text \u0026 imagery above provided by submission materials."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[0,4],2,"View full project submission \u003E\u003E"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"-"]]],[1,"h2",[[0,[],0,"Third Place (Tie): The Portage"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"Design Team Members:"],[0,[],0," Nathan Derks, AIA; John Everitt, Assoc.
