She was instrumental in the success\nof the firm\u2019s projects, most notably the Memorial to the Enslaved Laborers at\nthe University of Virginia, which offers a contemplative space that addresses\nthe country\u2019s shameful history of slavery."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Eager to demonstrate how architecture can serve others, Shannon spent\nthree years living and working in informal settlements across Latin America\nafter completing a Master of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design\nin 2013. Supported by an Appleton Fellowship, she was immersed in the\nchallenges communities face there, including health risks posed by climate\nchange. The focal point of her work was the Park and Institute Siti\u00ea in Rio de\nJaneiro, which transformed an informal dump into a celebrated public green\nspace.
