Infused with Oneida culture and traditions, the new facility celebrates community, sport, leisure and education for their people with facilities that the broader community may enjoy."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The building is a product of compounding influences of nature, culture and function. Defined by a central core; like a tree, \u201cbranches of function\u201d extend out from the core into distinct programmatic areas: gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, field house and finally a cultural core. At the center of these branches is the community core of the Atrium. Inspired by the traditional longhouse with its form, exposed columns and roof apertures; this Atrium is an oblong structure, oriented east-west like a traditional longhouse, with expressed large columns supporting a large skylight. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Within this functional approach of the structure is the underlying narrative of the Haudenosaunee Creation Story. According to the legend, Sky Woman descended to the Earth which was created on the back of a large snapping turtle shell. In this design translation, Sky Woman, represented by the framed heavens above, cascades her light onto a terrazzo floor that is partitioned in the pattern of a snapping turtle shell. Embedded in the floor is also a compass rose that orients the building and user to the greater Universe beyond. In this way, while the Earth extends on the horizontal plane in the form of the shell, the vertical axis, the \u201cAxis Mundi\u201d is defined by the centering of the compass under the skylight, completing the re-centering of the Oneida Community on their land."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Programmatically, the Oneida Nation culture is further preserved and celebrated with an Exhibition Gallery, Library, Classroom and Multi-purpose Room for community functions. The Multi-purpose Room opens onto a Community Garden, inspired by the relationship of the Oneida people with the land."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Supporting this important cultural program are the athletic components of the facility. The Gymnasium and the Natatorium (indoor swimming pool) bookend a second floor Fitness Studio and Dance\/Yoga Studio. The largest extension from the Atrium is the Field House which encompasses an indoor lacrosse field, team locker rooms, spectator seating, dining area and concessions with an upper mezzanine running track. This field is equipped for both box soccer and indoor lacrosse. With its\u2019 sweeping glue-lam roof above and glass wall surrounds, the Field House is an appropriate celebration to the sport the Nation ancestors invented generations ago.
