Given the neighborhood\u2019s assemblage of industrial\ndevelopment spanning several decades and the raw nature of its context, the center\nfeatures an effective cladding strategy that provides texture, depth, and\nmovement. It also operates as a double skin that assists with cooling the\nbuilding and shades its openings. They are bent, folded, and shaped into modules that can be rotated\n180 degrees to create an array of profiles across the center\u2019s fa\u00e7ade. As a way\nto distinguish the building further, the cladding is painted \u201cfire engine red,\u201d\nand the existing building shell, which serves as a backdrop, is a muted grey. Among its spaces are a handful of private offices, a\ncollaborative workspace, two recruit training rooms, and the apparatus bay for\nhands-on training. Working within the structural limitations of the concrete\ntees of the existing structure, the team opted to lengthen existing window\nopenings to allow more daylight to enter the shared workspaces. In addition,\ninterior storefront systems help filter daylight from the offices on the\nperimeter into the central areas, transforming a once dim and cavernous space\ninto a bright, energetic environment.
