The challenge was to be respectful of the past, while being authentic\nabout its place in the story of the island. This required great restraint in\nthe material palette and massing of the building. The \u2018Cream City Brick\u2019 (common to the\nregion) makes the building familiar in its historic context\nyet decidedly modern in its detailing as not to create a false sense\nof history. The minimal building is narrow and long so that the balance of\nthe square footage can recess back into the forest while the familiar\nheight-to-width presents itself at the street. Along the length of the\nbuilding, the eave is cut and\nthe roof material engulfs the rear walls to highlight a similar overall\nmass to the lighthouse keepers\nresidence. "]]]]},"title":""}]
