[["strong
1,"p",[[0,[0],0,"Program "],[0,[],1,"Summary and Statement:"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Morton
Hall
was constructed in 1960 and was the first building on the 500-acre campus of
the University of Alabama in Huntsville. It is home to the university’s College
of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The only building on campus designed
in the academic classical style, Morton Hall is beloved for its role in the
history of the campus as well as its traditional architecture that is unique to
the campus. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Tasked
with
designing an addition to the building, the architects initially followed the
university’s lead and developed concepts for an addition on a wooded site at
the back of the existing building. However
during conceptual development, the architects proposed building the addition
over an existing roadway and parking lot. The university embraced the concept
as it was consistent with the strategic goal of making the campus a more
pedestrian friendly environment. The result is an intimate campus quadrangle
defined by the original Morton Hall, the classroom addition, and a residence
hall designed and sited by the same architects twenty years earlier."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The
principal spaces of the addition include six large advanced-technology
classrooms, a lecture hall and a Black Box Theater. A two-story atrium occurs
where the new building joins the historic structure, creating a dynamic new
entrance feature. Out of respect for the original building, the architects
designed the addition with a more modern architectural vocabulary. A monumental
wall of glass, protected by a dramatic ten-foot overhang fronts the campus
quadrangle. The broad overhang and division of the glass panels suggests a
classical portico. A tower at the corner of the quadrangle marks the new
entrance to the academic complex. The combination of classical and modern
elements represents the university’s deep respect for tradition and its current
reputation is a leading aerospace research institution."]]]]}

[["strong
1,"p",[[0,[0],1,"Comments"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"This is a very well-described project, with clear siting, massing, and character objectives that are carried from conceptual definition to delivery with success. The architect should be commended for pushing the University to see the addition’s planning strategy to enhance the pedestrian campus experience. The building reads very clearly from inside out, and the interior spaces and palettes are both ordered and expressive. The design acknowledges two front doors, to the parking lot and to the new quad, and the design makes clear which entry is of priority. The large glass façade responds to the visual homogeneity of the lawn during the day, and allows the student public space to animate the quad at night. The vertical mullions in dialogue with the structural columns within establishes a nice rhythm, and the tectonics of the metal panel systems are well coordinated with overall massing and intimate details. The use of brick offers a consistent, but appropriately relevant, architectural language that helps this project mark its place in time – relative to the chronological context of its building partners. Overall, the building has a good balance between old and new, borrowing materials and organizational logic instead of directly using forms."]]]]}
