With
things like vaccines on everyone’s minds, there is one word that many within the
AIA have been using to describe this year: hope. After such a difficult year
for so many in 2020, it is great to have a glimmer of hope through the
windshield of 2021. While we acknowledge
the losses of the previous year and mourn for those who were lost to the
pandemic, it is important to still have hope as we start moving forward into
this year. I wanted to take the time to
update everyone on your local AIA chapter and what we have been up to since the
turning of the year in January. We have
been very busy since we kicked off the year at the beginning of Q1 and busy is
another one of the words that I would choose for our Chapter as we look ahead
in 2021. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," In late January, your local AIA Board of Directors
held a strategic planning session to update our plans for the year. I have also been thinking a lot about
leadership over the last few months, and not only because 2021 coincided with
the changing over of our country to a new presidency. I was also thinking about
leadership in relation to COVID-19. Many felt the pandemic personally in the
last year with the loss of friends and loved ones. Others felt it more
peripherally with lost revenue, stalled projects, and other impacts to their
practices. We were fortunate that our local chapter was able to weather the
storm thanks to the fiscal responsibility of the leaders that came before me. With
this in mind, I am well aware that I am standing on the shoulders of the many
great AIA CNY leaders. Last year, we had
several successes at our local chapter that we plan to expand upon during the
rest of this year."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," -
In February, partly in recognition of Black History Month,
our local AIA Central New York Chapter adopted a resolution on the esteemed life
and career of Kermit J. Lee, Jr. FAIA.
This resolution will be submitted to; Syracuse University for inclusion
in the Kermit J. Lee, Jr. Papers Collection at the SU School of Architecture;
the Preservation Association of CNY for a proposed new plaque series for
“Notable Black Americans of New York State”; the Archives of the American
Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C.; and his family in memoriam of his
great contributions to our Chapter and the architecture profession. I urge those of you who knew him and those
who did not to read the resolution to learn more about everything he
accomplished for our profession during his lifetime."]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," -
Our EDI task force, which started their efforts in
2020 is busy working to determine ways that our chapter and local firms can
become more equitable and supportive of a diverse membership. They are looking at learning opportunities,
grant opportunities, and hopefully, some fun social opportunities for the
coming year. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," -
We are continuing to focus on mentorship of our
members through monthly Women in Design (WiD) meetings, continued engagement
with local college and university student groups, and a refresh of our licensure
raffles for those who have passed divisions of the ARE exam by the Emerging
Professionals Committee. Our mentorship
efforts overlap several Chapter Committees, and we are looking at getting
groups like the EDI Task Force and Women in Design Committee together to work
on activities this year that have a shared interest. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," -
Following the success of our Sustainability Leadership
Lecture Series last year, our Committee on the Environment (COTE) is planning
for Earth Day 2021 happening later this month and looking at ways to give back
to and support our local communities.
"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," -
There has been a lot of work and discussion
surrounding the Design Awards for 2021 after we missed the Awards due to COVID
restrictions last year and we are excited to get back to this annual
recognition of the hard work of so many firms throughout Central New York. Please stay tuned for announcements and the
call for entries for the Design Awards this year!"]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," -
Finally, advocacy is always an important part of
what we do within the AIA and we are working with AIA New York State on local
and virtual advocacy efforts with our elected officials which we hope will be
able to engage many of you in the coming year. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," Those
are just a few of the quick highlights for what 2021 has in store for our
Chapter and membership. As nature renews
itself through the Spring season, we look with hope at ways to renew our
efforts to serve the members of AIA Central New York. In addition to the work of the member-led
Committees that we have described above, we will be working this year to get
our chapter ready for re-accreditation by AIA National, and accomplishing many
other housekeeping tasks on our plate including updates to our chapter bylaws. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," I
agree with many of the AIA leaders across the country that 2021 is looking to
be a hopeful and productive year for our local chapter and membership now that
we have all better adjusted to our new normal and gotten our feet under us. We also look forward to potential
opportunities for reuniting with you, our members, in person, later this year
as vaccination efforts ramp up everywhere, restrictions on gathering in person
are eased, and it becomes safer to gather together with you again. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0," In
closing, I invite all of you to reach out to our current board if you are
interested in getting involved with any of the exciting activities we have
planned for this year. We will also be looking for members who are interested
in shadowing our current board members to learn more about the important work
they do and prepare for our upcoming election season this fall. Please reach
out to "],[0,[0],1,"aiacny@aiacny.org"],[0,[],0," to
let us know how you would like to become more involved. We would love to hear how you are doing and
have you join us in everything we have planned for the rest of 2021!"]]]]}
