The design reflects the idea\nof confluence\u2014the park is situated at the junction of the San Antonio River and\nSan Pedro Creek\u2014throughout. Grand gestures such as the park\u2019s shaped lands\nrepresent the convergence of ecotypes, while the central pavilion\u2019s concrete\npetal structures draw inspiration from plants that funnel rainwater to their\nroots. The petals, of which the pavilion boasts 22, stand 26 feet high and form\na network of vaults that provide shade from the Texas sun and flow rainwater directly\nto an underground cistern. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"The park is located beside\nMission Reach, an eight-mile stretch of the San Antonio River with a riparian\nwoodland ecosystem that connects\u2014via a network of pedestrian trails\u2014the\ndowntown San Antonio River Walk to several south side communities and five UNESCO\nWorld Heritage Spanish mission sites. Surrounding homeowners concerned about\nsafety initially balked at idea of the project and asked that adjacent dead-end\nstreets remain fenced off. Throughout construction, foundation representatives\ncanvased entire neighborhoods to provide updates on the park. These\ninterpersonal connections created a groundswell of enthusiasm, and fences were\neventually replaced with gates, providing easier access to a new neighborhood\namenity. "]]],[1,"p",[[0,[],0,"Early in the design\nprocess, the foundation realized it was creating a venue that could easily\nsurpass its intended program. Evolving the design, the team and client trended\ntoward the aspirational to maximize the efforts of local organizations striving\nto make a positive impact on San Antonio. Since the park opened, in March 2018,\nthe collaborative ethos evident in the foundation\u2019s directives has already made\na positive impact on the community. In just a few short months, the park hosted\nnearly 140 educational events presented by 24 nonprofits which were attended by\nmore than 9,000 registrants. "]]]]}
